Kate Casale
Graduate Student - Environmental Science & Policy

Kate's thesis research is on an urban gardening program in Buenos Aires, looking at issues of agricultural development/programme management and the role it plays in household livelihoods/food security. She has also been doing research on food systems in general, particularly in their vulnerability to global environmental change. Kate would like to work in agricultural education, working with inner city or low-income rural youth. She loves skiing, sleeping outdoors, and folk music.

Laurajean Rehmke Lewis

Laura's theoretical focus is Biogeography with an emphasis on the origins and distributions of cropping systems, particularly those in Sub-Saharan Africa. For her dissertation, she has been working with pearl millet, a native cereal of Africa. Her work includes genetic and molecular characterization of pearl millet as well as ethnographic research with millet farmers. Laura is interested in germplasm conservation and farmer management of landraces.

Myra Kim

Myra is currently studying mountain glacier retreat and its effects on human perceptions, economies, and the physical environment. She is particularly interested in the use of climatological data for the purposes of determining the role of climate change on retreating glaciers. Her studies also involve researching environmental change and methods for predicting possible impacts to human societies and natural systems.

Patricia Pinho
Graduate Student - Anthropology

Patricia is working on common property regimes, conservation, and fishery management in the Brazilian Amazon. Her work is studying small scale fisheries on the Amazon, specifically resource management and conservation. She is also researching seasonality and how the local fisherman anticipate and reckon with them and their small simple practices and speech.
