My research and extension program broadly addresses ecology, conservation and restoration of marine and estuarine ecosystems. My work addresses fundamental processes in community and ecosystem ecology and their interaction with human activities. The approaches I take reflect my training as an experimental marine community ecologist, and ultimately I am interested in what determines the abundance and diversity of species in coastal systems. I am particularly interested in how human impacts such as climate change and biological invasions have influenced the functions and services that ecosystems provide. My work also investigates ways in which we can restore the health and function of coastal ecosystems through enlightened conservation and restoration approaches based on the best science available.
